Project Description

In recent years, social inequality in the educational system has become an urgent political topic, and due to the predicted shortage of specialist and management personnel, this issue is also playing an increasingly important role in the German universities.

However, what does education in the context of university mean? What definition of education is the starting point of the discourse? Therefore, one of the project schemes is to explore what education means for universities, on the basis of different perspectives, such as historical, legal/political, educational, sociological and so on. This question is of particular interest, especially given the major changes that the Bologna process has involved.
Educational equity is particularly important for technical universities, which traditionally have a lower participation of women in the so-called STEM disciplines and whose students represent a rather homogeneous group. Thus, the recruitment of female students and non-traditional students and scientists is of growing significance. On the other hand, a highly diversified student body entails particular challenges, which have to be discussed in the context of educational equity as well.

The aim of the project is to merge the different discourses from the disciplines of Sociology, Political Science, Educational Science and Legal Theory with regard to educational equity within the framework of gender equality in the universities. As a result, a transfer concept will be created, which could be used as the groundwork for further scientific discourses on the subject educational equity.

The duration of the project is three months and is supported by the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
