Only by using the latest findings from science and technology can modern and sophisticated architecture using highly transparent building envelopes, complex building bodies with interior texture, and modern building materials be realized. This also applies to future-oriented fire protection. In this class, the phenomena and progression of fires are analyzed. Building upon that, the fundamentals of fire prevention, control and safety are taught, with the following focal points: structural and plant technical fire control as well as operational and organizational fire control. In cooperation with the teaching and research area Gender and Diversity in Engineering there will be a focus on topics such as plant fire control, fire alarm systems, extinguishing systems, and building services systems during the course. The class is a meaningful supplement and extension of other courses offered by the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Students that take the course “Next Generation Fire Control Challenges and Solutions” are equipped with extensive knowledge and skills of a fire control engineer. They solve practical and complex problems of fire prevention in connection with all intersections of technical building equipment: They determine the principles of building laws for solving practical problems with appropriate risk implementation of technical regulations for planning and implementing projects while taking into account the aspects of preventative and organizational fire protection. They derive the complex requirements and challenges of the field of fire control in connection with all intersections of technical building equipment in context of construction projects. They assess and apply the methods, effects and general basics of technical fire control methods while taking into account the risks posed by fires and the specific factors as well as the interactions of these agents. They know fire control engineer methods and use these to achieve performance and protection oriented development of fire control solutions.
