Content
Social Development is a concept employed by major governmental and non-governmental institutions and organizations. It subsumes a plethora of measures and describes a direction of developmental strategies that puts people at the center. Likewise, sustainability is a central concept in contemporary societal discourse, research and development. Students will read texts from different disciplines to gain in-depth knowledge about the central concepts Social Development and Sustainability and most importantly learn how to deconstruct and re-think them. Students are encouraged to critically reflect upon the concepts during in-class and group discussions. In the second half of the semester, students will work on cases and apply what they have learned to a specific case. Along with deepening their general understanding of the concepts Social Development and Sustainability, students also learn how to do scientific research, how to build an argument and how to carve out a suitable research question.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Students understand the taught concepts of social development and sustainability and are able to describe differences and interdependencies between them. They are able to critically reflect the concepts and analytically apply them to a specific case. Students are able to hold a scientific presentation and/or write a scientific research paper.

Sustainable Development Goals
Social responsibility, sustainability and resilience are closely linked to the guiding princinple of sustainable development as represented by the Sustainable Development Goals. By gaining a deeper understanding of these concepts, students are enabled to apply and reflect them on the contents of their studies and their work as engineers.
