In times of global and complex change, crisis experiences and pressures are increasingly becoming the conditions of human life. According to Ulrich Beck, we live in a "World Risk Society" in which the perception of risks and the handling of dangers increase in importance. Resilience implies a development of the general resistance and regeneration capacity of technical and social systems, often starting from unexpected events.
The seminar offers an introduction to current discourses on resilience. Beginning with the definition and origin of the concept of resilience, various interpretations and approaches are discussed and applied.
Intended Learning Outcomes
After completing the seminar the students know and understand the different discourses concerning the concept of resilience. They can analyze and assess both global and local disruptions and crises in the context of environmental and natural disasters. Ultimately, in their future work as engineers, the students reflect resilience-oriented approaches and ways of thinking and can apply these to practical decisions.

Resilience is closely linked to the guiding principle of sustainable development and is explicitly addressed in various SDGs.
Particularly in view of increasing natural and environmental disasters, dealing with complexity and uncertainty is becoming more relevant. This requires the design and planning of adaptive infrastructures.
